What This Means For Superman

The Runtime Should Be Well-Received, But It Poses One Major Challenge

Those looking forward to theupcoming DC movienow know exactly how long it will be and have a better idea of what to expect. Some superhero movies have had extensive runtimes in recent years, including DC’sThe Batmanclocking in at two hours and 56 minutes, butSupermanwill not be continuing this trend. It will have a more standard runtime, and given that it includes the end credits and post-credits sequences, the main story will have concluded by the two-hour mark.

While the runtime should work well for a summer blockbuster meant to have mass appeal, there is a question of whether it can accommodate the extensivecast of DC characters inSuperman. The focus on Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), and other characters in the trailers make it clear thatthis story goes far beyond Superman, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor. It will primarily be about the Man of Steel, but it is also about opening the doors to the rest of the DCU, and it may be challenging to pull that off in two hours and nine minutes.

Our Take On Superman’s Runtime

James Gunn Knows What Works Best

Given the success Gun has had with theGuardians of the Galaxymovies,The Suicide Squad, andPeacemaker,I have full confidence in his creative vision, including this runtime. That being said, I am slightly skeptical about the movie being able to introduce and do justice to a brand-new Superman/Clark Kent and so many other pivotal characters over the course of only two hours. I imagine Gunn will prove that this skepticism is for naught whenSupermanis released in July, but it will be intriguing to see how the story balances so many characters.
