Though it won big with the recent Emmy nominations,Severancealso got a disappointing update about its third season’s release date.Severanceseason 2 endedfour months ago, in the middle of March.Severanceseason 1, however, ended in April 2022, meaning there was a three-year gap between seasons.Severanceseason 3has been confirmed, but there’s disappointing news about how long the wait will be.
While speaking withVariety,Apple TV+’s head of programming Matt Cherniss said thatSeveranceseason 3 hasn’t begun production yet, four months after season 2 ended. This comes shortly afterSeveranceseason 2 received 27Emmy Award nominations, the most of any show.

“No one wants it to be another three-year gap… I don’t believe that we have a production start date yet, but we’re moving in that direction.
“I think everyone’s just going to take a deep breath and enjoy where we’re at. I know they’re going as quickly as they can. When you have the success that a show like ‘Severance’ has, you want to verify you deliver on every level when the show comes back, and that takes some time. But they’re on it, and I think I’m feeling really good about where we’re at.”
It isn’t uncommon for streaming original shows to experience long delays between seasons -Wednesdayseason 2is debuting nearly three years after its freshman season, for example - it’s still disappointing to hear thatSeverancehasn’t begun production yet. Producing an entire season of a television show takes a long time, soSeveranceseason 3 may be quite a ways away.
Cherniss did, however, indicate that there are some hopeful updates aboutSeveranceseason 3. As he mentioned,it seems that Ben Stiller and the other writers are taking their time to make the new season as good as or better than the previous two installments. Cherniss also seems to realize that another three-year wait would hurtSeverance, which should help expedite production.
What Severance Season 3’s Production Update Means For The Apple TV+ Show
Severance Season 3 May Not Be Ready For Over A Year
The fact thatSeveranceseason 3 still hasn’t begun production pretty much guarantees that there will be at least a year-long wait between seasons. It’s already been four months sinceSeveranceseason 2 came out, and season 3 still has to finalize its scripts, go through filming, editing, marketing, and more. That process will take more than eight months.Severanceseason 3 is coming out after March 2026.
It’s harder to guess when exactlySeveranceseason 3 will actually come out. Matt Cherniss' comments seem to indicate that Apple TV+ is going to do everything it can to make sure they don’t repeat season 2’s long wait. Still, there’s a large gap between one and three years. It all depends on when production actually begins, butSeveranceseason 3 could reasonably come between fall 2026 and early 2027.
Luckily forSeverance, even a two-year wait probably won’t take away much of its momentum. Even with a three-year wait,Severanceseason 2 still became the most-watched show on Apple TV+ (viaDeadline).Fans may be frustrated, butSeverance’s popularity will likely be able to survive a long wait between seasons.
Our Take On Severance Season 3’s Production Delay
I’m Bummed That We Have To Wait For Severance Season 3, But I’m Hopeful That Means The Quality Won’t Diminish Between Seasons
My first reaction to the news thatSeveranceseason 3 hasn’t begun production was disappointment. I need to know what happened after Mark’s innie chose Helly R. over Gemma. I’m foaming at the mouth at the thought of waiting until potentially 2027 to find out. In a perfect world,Severanceseason 3 would come out tomorrow and I could stop wondering about how everything plays out.

Though I am supremely disappointed to have to wait at least a year forSeveranceseason 3, I’m still somewhat hopeful. Ben Stiller and the rest ofSeverance’s creators know what they’re doing.Severanceis a tremendous show, and I wouldn’t complain about the most buttery lobster in the world taking a while to cook. IfSeveranceseason 3 needs more time - though I wish it didn’t - it’s probably for the best.
