The originalHell Let Loosedevelopment studio announced its new game,Hunger, a while back, but a new gameplay reveal has shown an extraction shooter that seems to be in the same vein asHunt: Showdown. Black Matter createdHell Let Loosebefore selling the game to its current publisher, Team17, which took over development. Black Matter later re-branded as Good Fun Corporation, and nowHungeris its first venture under the new moniker.
A gameplay reveal trailer was posted to theHungerYouTube channel, and gives a clearer idea of what to expect from the game.Hungeris described as an extraction shooter and slasher set in Napoleonic Europe, and will feature PvPvE gameplay. It is set to enter early access sometime in 2025, and seems to share a lot thematically withHunt: Showdown, which has been one of the few extraction shooters with longevity.Hunger’s setting similarly leans into horror elements, with a mysterious Bacterium infecting the land and its inhabitants.

Hunger Is A New RPG Extraction Shooter From The Original Hell Let Loose Dev
Shoot & Slash Monstrosities In Napoleonic Europe
Interestingly, the video description and the game’sSteampage describeHungeras an “extraction RPG.” There are some brief clips of what appears to be a hub area with NPCs who give out quests, sothere appears to be a greater focus on character building, rather than the revolving door of loadouts typical in extraction shooters likeHuntandEscape from Tarkov. Two interesting excerpts regarding this stand out from the Steam page:
“Progress from level 1 to 100 by completing quests, surviving Expeditions, and mastering a robust skill system that evolves with your choices.”

“Players can also choose a unique crafting or gathering profession, allowing them to create valuable items - whether for personal use, to aid their friends, or to sell within the player-driven marketplace.”
Hunt: Showdownleans into some battle royale elements, and doesn’t offer much progression beyond a set of traits you add to your hunter as they survive and gain levels. Good Fun’s claim thatHungeris an RPG could help it stand out in a genre that hasn’t necessarily taken off, despite a couple long-term successes.Hell Let Loosehas a great visceral qualityin its combat and atmosphere, which could potentially be a strong point forHungerand its unsettling, plague-stricken setting.
Hunger Will Challenge Bungie’s Marathon In The Extraction Shooter Genre
Extraction Shooters Haven’t Quite Hit It Big
Hungerentering early access will make it a big year for the extraction shooter genre, as it’ll go toe-to-toe with Bungie’sMarathon, which is currently in aclosed alpha playtest. With Bungie’s legacy and name recognition,Marathonseems to have a legitimate chance at bringing extraction shooters further into the mainstream;TarkovandHuntare both popular in their own right, but have never necessarily reached exceptionally wide appeal. The genre has had plenty of other entrants – likeGray Zone Warfare,Marauders, and even the fantasy-leaning, dungeon-crawlingDark and Darker, whichHungerseems to hew close to as well – but none have really taken off.
Hungerhas something of an uphill battle, but it does have a striking appeal in its setting.Hunt’s vibe is unmatched, andHungerlooks like it’s leaning into horror aspects in a similarly compelling way, plus the trappings of Napoleonic Europe give it a unique flair, and the RPG elements may attract those who don’t jibe with the cutthroat nature of typical extraction shooters. Still,Marathonremains the marquee extraction shooter release of 2025, but if Good Fun can do it once withHell Let Loose, the studio has a good shot of releasing another enticing game withHunger.
