With the release of the latest game in theMetal Gearfranchise,Metal Gear Survivedoes not seem to be performing as Konami had anticipated in sales.

In the United Kingdom alone,Metal Gear Survivesold a fraction of what the game’s predecessor sold in physical copies. Even considering other franchise spinoffs in the vein ofSurvive, it has sold 85% fewer copies than the games before it. But, that is just physical copies. When taking a look on Steam,Metal Gear Survivecomes in 65thplace for current players, right afterH1Z1, which had about 4,000 players online at the time.

This lack of sales could be due to some of the controversies within the game itself, likeplayers having to purchase more saves for their game. Fans of the series don’t seem to be taking kindly to the use of microtransactions in the game, which could be hurting its sales.

Metal Gear Survivehas been criticized for more than just its use of microtransactions. In our own reviewof the game, we noted that it has a “wide range of issues” and it “doesn’t appeal to fans of the franchise.” Those are two things players probably do not want to hear when it comes to a newMetal Geargame.

Konami, however, seems to be taking this criticism in stride, as it is adding new content to the game within the next month.Konami announced a new co-op missionin its latest schedule update, which is titled “Rescue Mission.” As of the time of this writing, there is no specific release date for this new co-op mission.

Despite all the criticisms, fans can hopefully find some solace in knowing that Konami seems to be doing what it can to make the game more of something players want to enjoy, even if the scores for the game and the sales aren’t what they expected.Konami even released a statementencouraging players to keep an open mind going forward.

Metal Gear Surviveis available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
