The Windows 8 consumer trailer is utterly delightful . But I have a vast suspiciousness that by the metre it transport , it could completely suck . And that ’s because the the great unwashed who make the machines on which it is instal will get it on it in good order up with a bunch of Irish bull .
When you purchase a new computer , before it make it in your hand , the manufacturing business installs Windows on it . And when they do , they often put in a bunch of other useless programs as well , because the software vendors pay off them to . It help oneself lend prices down , and you’re able to think of them as sort of being like ads subsidize your hardware . The thing is , they also tend to in earnest demean carrying out .
I ’d been using a Windows 8 test trucking rig cater by Microsoft for several days , and it was great . But I was curious how the experience would translate to my personal auto . So I installed it on my small HP Pavilion notebook . Sure enough , I have a go at it it there too .
But it hit me that one of the things I ’m loving so much is that neither of these builds is littered up with a horrifying caboodle of junk that ’s only there because some jerk in Palo Alto did a deal with Symantec or Roxio or some silent fucking game that nobody would ever willingly instal on a machine . It means my old , cheap little notebook actually guide better on a new operating arrangement — because it does n’t have a million unneeded things go on in the background signal . One of my last glimpse of Windows 7 on the Pavillion was this banner popping up to remind me that without The Nortons , I ’m go to be eaten by Sasquatches or something :

I do n’t want to just individual out HP . essentially every major OEM clutters up Windows with garbage crapware . At CES this year , one of the things Vizio was touting about its all - in - ones and ultrabooks was thatthey’d fall with “ clean ” builds of Windows . cogitate about that : Vizio is using what it does n’t include as a selling period . Dell has done the same matter in the past . And at one point , Sony was eventrying to charge an extra $ 50 to not install a cluster of horrible crap all over your nice new computer .

Not that this is news to any longtime Windows user . I do n’t remember if my version of Windows 3.1 came with a bunch of turdy trialware all over it , but I know that my Windows 95 machine and every subsequent one I bought thereafter was litter like a Times Square sidewalk . Typically one of my first tasks when I get a new machine is to begin uninstalling as much crapware as I can . It ’s abundantly clean that I ’m not alone in that . Even Microsoft is mindful of what a dreadful problem it is , otherwise it would n’t make such a big tidy sum about the PCs it sells in its computer memory beingMicrosoft Signature personal computer . That means no bloatware .
And its clean that Microsoft is working to verify that you wo n’t need as much of that third party stuff with Windows 8 . It ’s baking in a band of the traditional add - ons as native features . For example , its next generation operating organization will fall with a beefed up edition of Windows Defender . You ’d hope that would kill the need for some of the many wearisome extras most masses have to twain with Windows . And yet , despite Defender being on by default , Microsoft is still promoting lots of third company security vendors .
One of the great things about Windows 8 is that it ’s all unclouded railway line and clutter - free . Yet I powerfully suspect that , behind the scene , OEMs are at this very moment already pretend deals to load up their machines with unneeded software to bring monetary value down . It ’s going to happen .
That is , unless Microsoft actively works to stop OEMs from pollute its organisation and dragging down its brand . Microsoft has already been quite venturous in breaking with the past tense in terms of user user interface . And its for sure not afraid to be a bully . If it truly desire Windows 8 to be a radically adept user experience , it needs to use its office in the marketplace to force OEMs to stop ruining Windows .
