This weekend , the first half of Twilight ’s final chapter , Breaking Dawn , hits house . We ’ll finally get to see Stephenie Meyer ’s most controversial scene , as reimagined by acclaimed conductor Bill Condon . How on Earth does the director of Gods and Monsters and Kinsey undertake the famous “ imprinting ” aspect ?
We were favorable enough to verbalise with Condon on the phone , and we asked him about revulsion flick , and whether Bella is a feminist use model . Here ’s what he told us …
io9 : There ’s a sight of horror that deal with estrangement , but not a pot of horror that deals with romance as its main subject – what ’s it like mashing up revulsion and romance ?
BC : It ’s so interesting . Another elbow room of enjoin that , is that it ’s distaff repulsion , you know ? So I feel like a slew of your other movies have been about multitude fetishize report . Like the Frankenstein story in Gods and Monsters , or the mode in which Kinsey accumulate stories . And with Breaking Dawn , there are so many aspect of the story that the fan fixate on . What ’s it like to be the one creating stories for other people to fetishize ? To be the elementary reservoir instead of commenting on a master author ?
Yeah , but it ’s weird — because [ this moving-picture show ] is n’t the primary reference , in a way , because it ’s building on the other movies . I feel the movie does fetishize the characters , in a way . It ’s funny , it ’s a word I used a mess when I came to the wedding dress .
Because that ’s something where it has to be exactly right .
It has to be right , and you have to make it [ live up to masses ’s expectations ] . The number of guess it takes to reveal it is middling extreme , you know . I know what you intend — but it ’s interesting , there ’s a clip in Breaking Dawn from Bride of Frankenstein , which is plainly a favourite movie of mine .
But in a style , this movie has the same relationship to the original [ gloaming films as Bride of Frankenstein has to Frankenstein . ] There ’s a sense in which things become more self aware — but not with a heartbeat , I think . Just more because the family relationship with the hearing is so interactive , I think it ’s sort of imposible not to take into [ condition ] and almost kind of level into the storytelling the kind of relationship we people towards these character . There ’s a stack of exepctations about things like the wedding party , and for certain the first fourth dimension they make love , that we sort of play with . You know , like “ Is that all we ’re capture on their wedding party night ? ” “ No , because the main dowry is go to come a little later , when she remembers the wedding night . ” thing like that .
And we ’ve written about the fact that Melissa Rosenberg add a bed of knowingness to the screenplays that is n’t there in quite the same room in the account book .
I reckon that ’s on-key , yeah , and I also guess there ’s just a totally different kind of political perspective , and just a sense of the earth . I do think she ’s such a major collaborationist , as well as Kristen Stewart . There ’s a lot of [ Stewart ] in this movie version of the quality , that somehow subsist between the Bella in the novel and what Kristen Stewart bring to it .
Is Breaking Dawn a feminist tale ? Is Bella a office model for woman ?
