After more than twenty years of ontogeny , an international team of astronomer has unveiled a raw scope optics system that produces mellow resolve ikon of space than anything else on the planet . Or off the satellite , for that matter – this thing records seeable - light images with more than twice the pungency of those capture by the Hubble Space Telescope .
“ It was very exciting to see this unexampled television camera make the night sky wait crisp than has ever before been possible ” said Laird Close of the University of Arizona , the project ’s principal scientist , in a statement . “ We , for the first fourth dimension , can make abstruse images that resolution objects just 0.02 second across — this is a very small slant — it is like adjudicate the width of a dime seen from 100 miles away , or like solve a convoy of three school motorbus driving together on the surface of the Moon . ”
Hubble has long been the unobtainable go - to scope for imaging space in seeable light . The grounds ? It ’s in outer space . Their Modern AO organisation takes a thin , curved - chicken feed mirror ( just 1/16th of an inch flimsy ! ) assess 2.8 - meters across and floats it on a magnetic field 30 - feet above the 21 - foot - diameter main mirror ofthe Magellan scope . This float Adaptive Secondary Mirror ( ASM ) can vibrate , change its conformation at close to 600 points across its surface , at a rate of 1,000 times per second , thereby counteracting the blurring effects of the ambience .
“ As a answer , we can see the seeable sky more clearly than ever before , ” Close said . “ It ’s almost like have a telescope with a 21 - foundation mirror in place . ”
The team calls its new AO system “ Magellan Adaptive Optics , ” or MagAO for myopic , and the opthalmic setup is already do discovery .
