Imagine walking into a grocery store like Whole Foods and filling up your cart with fresh goods. When it comes time to pay, you swipe your palm and walk out the door. That’s what’s coming to over 500+ Whole Foods Market locations by the end of the year.
Amazon One launchedin 2020as a new contactless payment system where all you do is register your palm to a credit card. Then, swipe your hand over a terminal to quickly pay for goods. It’s like facial or fingerprint recognition, but using your palm. Eventually, Amazonbrought this technology to Panera Bread, and now it’s expanding into other retailers.

The pay-with-palm option is already available at select stores throughout the United States, but this weekAmazon confirmedWhole Foods is going all-in with the technology. The company says that all 500+ Whole Foods Market locations in the U.S. will get it by the end of the year.
According to Amazon, palm scans are less of a security concern than facial recognition for users. Each “palm signature” considers a palm’s unique shape, size, texture, vein structure, and more, and no two palms are alike.
“We are always looking for new ways to delight our customers and improve the shopping experience. Since we’ve introduced Amazon One at select Whole Foods Market stores over the past two years, we’ve seen that customers love the convenience it provides, and we’re excited to bring Amazon One to all of our customers across the U.S.” said Leandro Balbinot, chief technology officer at Whole Foods Market.

Then, the next time you visit, you can ditch your wallet and scan your hand to checkout. Additionally, there’s anoption to pre-enrollif you’d like.
Along with Whole Foods Market, Amazon One technology is available at select participating stores, including Panera Bread, the Colorado Rockies MLB team’s Coors Field, and Airport locations like Hudson, CREWS, OHM, and more. So, the next time you head to Whole Foods, try paying with your palm.
