Here are all of the best items in Pokémon TCG Pocket’s Genetic Apex Set.

Pokémon TCG Pocket has taken fans of the franchise and card collecting fanatics by storm in the Fall of 2024 thanks to its fun collecting mechanics as well as its battling. And, especially when it comes to the battling, not all cards are created equal and building a deck can be tricky. So, to help you get on the right track with item cards, here are the best item cards from the Genetic Apex set, ranked.

Best and worst Genetic Apex item cards in Pokémon TCG Pocket

Below is our ranking of the six item cards that launched with Pokémon TCG Pocket. These are technically from Promo-A, but are associated with the release of the initial set, Genetic Apex. These are rated for their effectiveness in most battling situations.

#6: Pokédex

“Look at the top 3 cards of your deck”

The Pokédex is very situational, and you won’t see it in many decks as of right now. Perhaps in future expansions when there are additional draw mechanics, it will become more useful, but the only value I can see in this right now is if you are between two Supporter cards.

#5: Hand Scope

“Your opponent reveals their hand”

Hand Scope is best used when your opponent is going for a setup, or if you have a Red Card and are deciding if it is a good time to use it. Otherwise, this card is very niche and not often used due to its situational nature.

#4: Red Card

“Your opponent shuffles their hand into their deck then draws 3 cards”

Red Cards are the worst of the best items, still giving the user some opportunity to make a play with it, but also being a bit dependent on the right situation. This card can also help your opponent get the draw they need, so it has its own risks.

#3: Potion

“Heal 20 damage from 1 of your Pokémon”

Sometimes 20 damage can be the difference maker in staying alive for one extra turn, which can sometimes be all you need to win a battle. Because of that and its overall value, this one ranks #3 on our list. Nearly every deck I run has a Potion or two in it, but its not something that is a must-use.

#2: X Speed

“During this turn, the Retreat Cost of your Active Pokémon is 1 less”

These next two items should be in every deck built in the game’s current state, and ranking them is extremely difficult. X Speed has immense value in many situations and can be all you need to save a Pokémon.

#1: Pokéball

“Put 1 random Basic Pokémon from your deck into your hand”

Pokéball is the best item in Genetic Apex in Pokémon TCG Pocket and should likely have two copies in every single deck you run. It has incredible value and can get you the Basic Pokémon you need to begin setting up your strategy. Also, some of the best cards in the game are Basic, so this can be crucial in landing something like a Mewtwo EX or Pikachu EX.

Honorable Mention: Fossils

The Fossils are all technically items as well and can be great for decks with only two to three Pokémon in them. They can easily be discarded, or used to take a hit when your opponent uses Sabrina. Currently, this is their primary function in the games early meta.
