Maureen McHugh ’s latest brusque story collection , After the Apocalypse ( Small Beer Press ) , is a sinister look at what the next C might hold for ordinary people . Known for acute , reference - driven employment in novels like China Mountain Zhang and Nekropolis , McHugh makes even the most extraordinary circumstance feel as real as blood . These nine narration take property in a humankind that has been ravage by prion diseases and economic collapse , even as it record a Modern age of artificial word and green biotech .
